Today, I received my standard weekly email from my former Planned Parenthood affiliate, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast. You would think they would have removed my name and email by now, but that is another story. Anyway, it was a pretty boring update with nothing exciting to report, but as I was scrolling through something caught my attention.

This particular affiliate always has their big gala event at the Hyatt in downtown Houston. Lots of well-to-do Houstonians come to show support of this huge affiliate, the fourth largest in the country to be exact, and all of the “services” they provide including abortion. No one that comes is surprised that Planned Parenthood provides abortion services. No, they know that all too well.

In fact, the people that come to this particular gala for this particular affiliate come because they are proud to support the largest abortion clinic in the Western Hemisphere. They know what abortion is all about. They know what abortion looks like. They know, and they support it proudly, at $500 per individual ticket.

Now, back to the attention-getting. I always like to see the names of the high rollers who are listed as the “co-chairs” of the event. These are donors who give tens of thousands of dollars to the affiliate and are therefore asked to put their name down on the invitation. They usually have some type of status among the elite local community.

Name recognition is important when you are trying to raise over a million dollars at one event. I scrolled through the invitation and there, listed, was an incredibly familiar name, Jeff Smisek.

That name may not ring a bell to you, but I know it well. I spend most of my life on airplanes. Before every take off we get a little safety demonstration. If we are lucky enough to be on a decent sized plane, that demonstration is shown on a video. I personally prefer to fly on airlines that are in the “Star Alliance.” Some of those include United, US Airways, and Lufthansa.

I am a million mile flyer with this program, which includes a few perks, and because of this I try to stick with United when I travel. When the United safety demonstration video begins, a message from the CEO comes on first. He is thanking us for traveling on United and talks about how image is so important to his airline. That man’s name? Jeff Smisek.

I almost couldn’t believe my eyes with what was on this invitation. Surely not. Surely not MY Jeff Smisek! Surely not the CEO of my favorite airline!! Let it be a lie!!! He was actually listed with someone else, a lady named Diana Strassmann.. Hoping there was someone else with the name, Jeff Smisek, I googled both of their names together to see what I would find. Well, they are married. So, Jeff Smisek, CEO of United Jeff Smisek, also co-chair of Planned Parenthood’s annual gala, is one in the same.

At this point I was disappointed… and angry. Now, I am doing something about it. Jeff Smisek runs the second largest airline in the world. And now he is co-chairing an event for the LARGEST ABORTION CLINIC IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. This abortion clinic’s goal is to perform at least 75 abortions, 6 days a week. They intend to perform abortions up to 25 weeks gestation. And THAT is what the CEO of United Airlines stands for.

Well, this million mile flyer has had enough. It is time to expose Jeff Smisek for who he really is. He is helping to kill the most defenseless among us. And apparently, he is PROUD to do it! He has his name plastered on their invitation!

I am taking a stand against United. Will you stand with me? Will you say NO to United Airlines? This one clinic ALONE in Houston is killing over 23,000 babies per year!!! THAT is what Jeff Smisek is supporting. Jeff says United Airlines cares about their image… well, let’s see how much they care.

Let’s get this message sent out far and wide. On my website,, I have included a sample “letter to the editor” that you can send in to your local paper. Share this article on your blog. Share it on your Facebook and Twitter. We need to hold these people accountable. Our voices DO make a difference, but our dollars DEFINITELY make a difference! Stand against Jeff Smisek! Letter to the Editor

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, located in Houston is the 4th largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the United States. They run the largest abortion clinic in the Western Hemisphere. This clinic’s goal is to perform at least 75 abortions, 6 days a week. That totals over 23,000 abortions per year. And they terminate pregnancies up to 25 weeks gestation…that is babies over 6 months old.

So, you can imagine the surprise I felt when I found out that the CEO of United Airlines, Jeff Smisek, was “co-chairing” this particular affiliate’s annual gala in Houston, Texas. www.ppaction.org. When flying on United, you will often see a video of the safety demonstration on television monitors throughout the plane. Before the demonstration begins, Jeff Smisek will come on and thank you for flying and tell you that “image” is very important to his airline. Well, let’s see if that is really true.

Myself, along with thousands of other pro-lifers across the country, are taking a stand against United Airlines. Jeff Smisek runs the second largest airline in the world. And now he is co-chairing an event for the LARGEST ABORTION CLINIC IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. Enough is enough. It is time to expose Jeff Smisek for who he really is.

    Today I found out that you, the CEO of United Airlines, is a proud supporter of abortion. An industry that is responsible for over 53 million lives since the 70’s. This saddens me. I choose to help women resolve their poverty and desperate situations in a way that does not encourage them to take the lives of their own children. Can you not find a better way to support women, than abortion? I believe you are a smart business man. Can we not come up with a solution that brings in profit and also avoids murder?

    If it is the former, are you asking United Airlines to take action against their employee due to actions as a private citizen? Thanks.

    • She made it very clear that this is something he is doing himself – not United Airlines. And she also made it clear that as CEO, his personal decisions certainly reflect on the ‘image’ of his company. He’s not just a baggage handler – he’s the CEO. She isn’t action the organization to take any action – she’s asking those of us who care to encourage Mr. Smisek to think about the image this presents for his company.

    I will also tell all my friends, barrage the social media outlets and write editorials to the Star Tribune degrading the reputation of United Airlines (these messages will be more than just about the support of abortion, many will not even have anything to do with abortion and will effect even those who are pro-choice – some will just be free good publicity for other airlines – nothing better than positive word of mouth ads for Delta to hurt United – nothing worse for United than several bad reviews of their services popping up everywhere).

    You have messed with the wrong group of people. The young adults in this country (the ones that make stuff go viral on the internet) are primarily Pro-Life and very much against companies that support the culture of death. You may not feel the effects now of your poor decision, but United will be feeling it eventually.

If all people who believe that God is the creator of life and not man (they are just the means to get humans reproduced)would boycott United Airlines, Jeff Smisek might get the strong message that his customers do not like his stand on killing helpless innocent babies who cannot speak or defend their right to life. A woman has a right to her body but when another life is growing inside her, that life has a right to its life and it is not for her to choose the fate of that child. God created it and he will decide the path for that child. Scripture is clear on who creates life and it starts at conception. Obviously, Mr. Smisek nor his wife are christians so why is anyone surprised about this. When God is not in you, then another spirit is and we all know who that is, don’t we. Scripture is also clear on that issue too.

    Trust me, I’m your biggest fan. What you did, standing up against PP is certainly commendable.

    Yet…i’m just having trouble understanding this. I mean…didn’t we attack people who were against Chick-fil-a for saying this exact thing? That Mr. Cathy was only expressing his own opinion, donating his own money, to organizations that happened to agree with his own beliefs?

    So why, all of a sudden, can we ask ourselves to not fund a business because it’s CEO (like Chick-fil-a) supports a company that agrees with HIS own beliefs?

    Just having a hard time understanding…please, don’t think badly of me. Would just like some enlightenment 🙂

    • I don’t know, Lisa. I heard this from someone else and I guess I don’t understand. 🙂 I had absolutely NO problem with pro-gay people boycotting Chick-fil-a! That is absolutely their right! The leader of Chick-fil-a stands for something they don’t believe in so they don’t support Chick-fil-a. Great! That is the wonderful thing about living in a free country. I never attacked anyone for that. So, now, I don’t want to support a company who is led by a man that support the killing of millions of babies every year. That is absolutely my right.

    I already told several of my friends and e-mailed a local radio station (KTRH in Houston, TX)with the story, I e-mailed Life Desicion International (the pro-life organization that keeps the boycott list of companies that support Planned Parenthood), and I am going to write to Smisek today. Apparently this is not the first time for Smisek to support Planned Parenthood. I found “Party watch” story dated Oct 18, 2007 on the Houston Chronicle website that says

    “Planned Parenthood
    Who: David Mincberg and Lainie Gordon.
    Where & what: At the Houston Hilton Post Oak, where the couple were honored at Planned Parenthood’s annual gala chaired by Kari Findley and Ken Sill.

    Misc.: Among the 480 guests helping raise $340,000 were Diana Strassman with Jeff Smisek, Joan Wich, Alice and Rischer Randall, state Rep. Ellen Cohen, Anne and Albert Chao, Jessica Rossman with Gordon Bethune, and Stef and Jay Levy.”

  29. Horrible. How can anyone be *proud* to sponsor abortion??? What if we changed it to sponsoring slavery? Or animal abuse? Oh, they would be appalled! This world has gotten so insane, I can’t imagine what our Heavenly Father who loves everyone equally must be thinking about all this. To trash His creation over and over and to glorify this intrinsically evil act (never is it morally right). He is a JUST God and we will one day be face to face with His Justice.

  31. The choice of Mr Smisek shows an extraordinary lack of judgement which should call into question his capability to lead UAL. I think the UAL board of directors should hold him accountable for the negative impact on company revenue, stock prices and public image….. Not to mention enabling the killing of the most vulnerable and innocent members of our society.

  34. There is no difference between us boycotting United Airlines and the people that boycott Chik-Fil-A.
    The reason I, and many others, were upset over Chik-Fil-A’s treatment stemmed from politicians trying to stop them from opening new franchises, or even saying that they were not welcome within their cities (Chicago, Boston, others) based upon the Christian beliefs expressed by the owner.

    By not flying United Airlines, I am not saying that United Airlines cannot do business in the country or certain cities, I am just expressing my right to not give business to someone that I know will spend that money to support abortions.

  38. As a fellow pro-life supporter, I’d like to respectfully ask everyone to stop, take a breath, and consider a question: What is the primary goal here? Best case scenario, that Mr. Smisek would see the error of his ways and convert to the pro-life side. Agreed? If this is true, is reactionary, threatening, and hostile contact with Mr. Smisek going to advance this goal? If not (and I don’t think it will), why do it? When was the last time someone convinced you with the use of such tactics? Rather than convert, all these tactics do is more firmly anchor people to their position. What about offering prayer for him? What about asking him why he is pro-abortion and listening–really listening– to his response? Why not try this with your sister-in-law, co-worker,or neighbor? Become a listener, and save the world.
    The tactics of left/right, Republican/Democrat, pro abortion/pro-life do nothing but keep us chasing our tails and encourage us to commit the very actions that almost guarantee failure.
    Try thinking out of the box.

    • No one has asked anyone to send threatening or hostile emails. I have no idea what you are talking about. I was converted because of an ultrasound and because pro-lifers held me accountable. We are holding him accountable. It is appropriate and Biblical.

  39. Abby! I just read your book and I’m singing praise to our God for what He’s done through you and the Coalition for Life! Your book has answered a question for me which has been resonating in my soul since I was first old enough to know what abortion is – “What can I do to stop it?” Your illustration of a peaceful conversion through kindness and prayer has opened my eyes to the fact that pro-choice advocates are not my enemy, but rather creations of God who have been lead astray by the true enemy. The raw honesty of your story is unbelievable and I praise God that you had the courage to share it; I know He will use it again and again to touch the lives of many on both sides of this debate. I love you my sister and I am both praying for and seeking to become involved with the Coalition for Life. Thank you for letting God lead you.
    PS-This is not the first time United Airlines has disappointed. Southwest however runs on Biblical standards of stewardship and responsibility, I’ll always fly with them.     As a dedicated United customer for the past two years (Mileage Plus #03266864581), I was absolutely horrified to learn recently that you are a proud supporter of the Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast clinic. As I’m sure you already know, this clinic performs over 23,000 abortions per year. And they terminate pregnancies up to 25 weeks gestation…that is babies over 6 months old. As a mother of four children myself, that makes me nothing less than disgusted.

    Each year, thousands of women are sterilized, and mentally and physically damaged by abortion. Medical research has linked abortion and several adverse health effects such as an increase of infertility, premature birth, placenta previa, and breast cancer. The women who choose abortion are left to suffer by organizations like Planned Parenthood, which does nothing to provide these women with services that address these issues after abortion.

    Planned Parenthood frequently cites Margaret Sanger as a heroine acting in the inner cities to help poor women gain access to family planning services. It does not mention, however, that Margaret Sanger’s motivation for helping these women is that she was a eugenist, who wanted to rid society of minority and low-income populations by promoting abortion. At the sixth International Neo-Malthusian and Birth Control Conference in 1925, Margaret Sanger complained, “no attempt whatever is made to discourage the rapid multiplication of undesirables- and natives- within our own borders.” Margaret Sanger was no friend to poor women. She was motivated by her own personal agenda to use abortion to wipe out their presence in society. Why is it that most of Planned Parenthood clinics are located in poor neighborhoods? Why are most of their abortions performed on women of color? Sadly, Planned Parenthood carries Margaret Sanger’s horrible tradition into the 21st century.

    As a professional woman, I travel quite frequently and alternate my air carrier choice between United and Delta. Until I learn that you have rescinded your support of Planned Parenthood, I will no longer be doing business with United Airlines. Effective immediately, I am canceling my Mileage Plus membership and transferring all of my purchasing power to Delta. I would strongly urge you to reexamine your support of an organization that destroys so many women and children year after year.

  45. CEOs make calculations and I’m guessing Mr Smisek calculated that UAL had more to gain than to lose by supporting the murder of unborn people. Or perhaps he’s just so liberal that he decided to go ahead with the course he took, and public opinion be damned. In either case, it’s not only customers he stands to piss off, it’s also shareholders, who elect directors. If there’s no blowback from within UAL, then we can know for sure this is not the kind of company we wish to entrust with our lives.

    My tax dollars are being spent in the direct funding of Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills but for now, at least, there is nothing I can do about that. I can, however, CHOOSE what airline I will, personally, use in my travela.
